About the Position: This position is in the Safety Department, A. T. Augusta Military Medical Center, Fort Belvoir, VA. This department provides oversight for a dynamic safety and occupational health program for a medical center and family health centers located in Northern Virginia. The job requires incumbent to be able to communicate to personnel at all levels, train large and small groups of employees.
Duties
Plans, implements, administers, and evaluates a 24 hour safety and occupational health program for military and civilian personnel, covering medical, dental, research and medical supporting facilities and surrounding clinics.
Verify that the command's Safety program covers the implementation of accident prevention measures and procedures, analysis of accident reports for trends, safety awards, traffic and motorcycle safety, and accident investigation.
Develop and issue local directives and procedures establishing technical and administrative safety and occupational health requirements for the command's healthcare facilities and the outlying health clinics.
Advise management, staff, and operating officials on safety matters.
Select, prepare and distribute safety information throughout the medical treatment facility.
Oversee safety and occupational health inspections to identify and recommend control measures for hazardous conditions.
Conduct staff surveys of safety programs for the healthcare facilities and outlying health clinics, to include evaluation of program objectives, direction, and command support and safety supervision.
Coordinate and provide safety training for assigned Safety Representative and Hospital personnel.
Develop and promotes safety campaign materials for the healthcare facilities and outlying health clinics.
Confirm that safety standards are published in appropriate training manuals.
Establish numerous safety committees for the healthcare facilities and outlying health clinics.
Develop policies and procedures for safety at medical treatment facilities.

Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 2 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

- This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: applying safety and occupational health laws, policies, regulations, and directives to eliminate or control potential hazards; conducting safety and occupational health surveys to identify, analyze and evaluate hazards/risks; implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses; training personnel in safety and occupational health subjects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Preferred but not Required: Safety-related certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional Certificate (CHSP) or Professional Certificate in Safety and Occupational Health (CP-12). Bachelor's degree in either Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) or Enviromental Health and Safety (EHS).
