About the Position: The position is in the Residential Treatment Facility, Behavioral Health Department at Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center, in Ft. Belvoir, VA.

Duties
Provide social work services to patients, including detailed substance abuse history and bio-psychosocial examination, to substantiate or exclude diagnosis of substance abuse or dependence.
Independently counsel patients on primary and secondary illnesses.
Collect bio-psycho-social information about patients using interview, case history, and observation techniques and assessment methods.
Provide relapse prevention counseling, crisis intervention counseling, and motivational interviewing strategies.
Analyze information collected to determine diagnosis, treatment plan and/or advisability of counseling or referral to other specialists or institutions.
Evaluate treatment effectiveness and adjust patient's treatment plans as appropriate.
Collaborate with Military Treatment Facility and other services for the purpose of coordinating follow-up and treatment to assure continuity of patient care, facilitate necessary transfers within facility, and post discharge follow-up and treatment.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations; the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements for Social Worker (Substance Abuse): Degree: Master's degree (or higher degree) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting bio-psychosocial evaluations of substance abuse patients, providing psychotherapy to patients, developing behavioral health treatment plans or recommendations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
License: A current, active, valid, and unrestricted independent social work clinical licensure from a U.S. State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction is required.
Highly Preferred: Substance Abuse specific certification.
