Salary: $80 665 - 176 620 per year
Published at: Apr 26 2024
Employment Type: Full-time
NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. We're looking for a Physicist to join our team!
This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
ZP-1310-III:
- Contribute to research and development of high-speed superconducting integrated devices, circuits, and systems for applications in voltage standards, radio-frequency communications, and superconductor-based quantum computing.
- Design, model, and simulate the electrical properties of the junctions and superconducting circuits for optimal microwave and superconductivity properties.
- Develop and optimize fabrication processes for high-temperature superconducting Josephson junction circuits.
- Perform tests and measurements of the junctions and circuits at cryogenic temperatures.
- use CAD circuit layout tools to design and build packaging and measurement circuits.
- Communicate and collaborate with team members, other NIST teams, and external teams.
- Present and publish results as appropriate.
ZP-1310-IV:
- Lead, and develop a research program in high-speed superconducting integrated devices, circuits, and systems for applications in voltage standards and radio-frequency communications.
- Develop new concepts for improved measurements including underlying algorithms and system design, hardware development, test and integration, measurements, and data analysis.
- Present results clearly and accurately, through both presentations and journal articles, to management, sponsors, and the scientific community.
- Serve as a mentor and resource to junior-level scientists.
- Provide consultation in technology and precision measurements to researchers and sponsors.
- Perform tests and measurements of the junctions and circuits at cryogenic temperature.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
Or
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience
or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity
and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
And
In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify.
To Qualify for the ZP-III, applicants must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level (ZP-II at NIST.
Specialized experience is defined as:
- Experience with precision RF and microwave instrumentation and measurements.
- Design, simulation, and fabrication of microwave devices and/or circuits.
- Data analysis with a modern programming language.
- CAD and electrical circuit layout and design tools.
- Experience with testing superconducting circuits.
Or
Master's or equivalent degree
Or
Combination of education and experience
To Qualify for the ZP-IV, applicants must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level (ZP-III at NIST).
Specialized experience is defined as:
- Experience leading and developing research programs, and writing funding proposals.
- Experience with precision RF and microwave instrumentation and measurements
- Design, simulation, and fabrication of microwave devices and/or circuits
- Data analysis with a modern programming language
- Experience with testing superconducting circuits
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
