This position is in Facilities Management Division (AFM), Operations Department, Electric shop of the National Gallery of Art. The purpose of this position is to repair, inspect, troubleshoot and, maintain building electrical components and systems, to include but not limited to defective wiring, controls, equipment, and lighting fixtures.


The incumbent for this position will:

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards for Electrical Worker WG-2805-08 which includes possession of the following job elements: SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision** 2-B. Knowledge of Electrical Equipment. 25-D. Theory and Instruments Used in Shop and Trade Practices 25-E. Technical Practices 75-J. Ability To Use Electrical Drawings 81-B. Ability to Use and Maintain Hand Tools 96-A. Troubleshooting Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Must be physically able to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).  Must be able to work unscheduled evening and weekend hours.  Requires work inside and outside, in all kinds of weather.  Work is in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy.  Work can be performed 30 feet above the floor, or more.  Work can be in confined spaces.  Work carries risk of electrical shock and burns, and entanglement in moving machinery parts.  Work is near hazardous materials and chemicals.  Incumbent will be required to walk, climb, crawl, kneel, stoop, bend, push and pull for extended periods of time.  Must have the ability to distinguish color and shades of color for wire color codes.  Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
