You will serve as a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN in the UTILITIES DIVISION of NAVAL FACILITIES ENG COMMAND HAWAII.

Duties

You will install, modify, and replace generation and distribution equipment in substations, power-generating facilities, transformer vaults, or distribution centers. You will install and maintain overhead and underground distribution lines as assigned. You will set correct wire tension or sag in accordance with strength and weight of wire. You will use test devices (e.g., voltmeters, ohmmeters, meggers) and electrical tools to conduct basic checks for continuity, resistance, voltage, shorts, insulation breakdowns, and grounds. You will troubleshoot equipment under simulated or actual operating conditions, isolating the problem to a particular component or assembly.

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: 1) Installing transformers, capacitors, insulators, switches, circuit breakers, and fuses in connection with main distribution lines; 2) Using test equipment such as ohmmeters, voltage testers, clamp-on ammeters, and meggers to determine high resistance, grounds and open circuits; 3) Climbing poles to string overhead wire; and 4) Driving bucket trucks to install and repair electrical equipment and cables. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
