You will serve as an IT SPECIALIST (SYSADMIN) in the Marine Corps Communication-Electronics School (MCCES) of TRAINING AND EDUCATION COMMAND.

Duties

You will optimize the functionality of networks and systems, and diagnos and recover failed systems as necessary. You will reallocate resources as they become available, optimize systems performance, and recommend additional components to improve overall systems performance. You will install, test, and implement vendor-supplied modifications to existing systems software; independently determine the feasibility of installing modifications and schedule implementation to ensure continuity of operations. You will configure system components such as disk drives, printers, and other peripherals needed to support the operating environment. You will ensure that all hardware or software that is installed is appropriately and configured securely using Security Technical Implantation Guides (STIGs) or in the absence of applicable STIGs using industry best practices. You will interpret diagnostic information in order to isolate probable hardware problems before they appear and initiates actions to correct failure.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position is designated as a Cyber IT/Cybersecurity Workforce position. You must obtain and maintain the credentials as described in SECNAV M-5239.2 for specialty area IT Specialist (SYSADMIN), level INTERMEDIATE, within 12 months of appointment.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: planning and coordinating the installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of hardware and software systems; AND analyzing functional IT network system requirements, translating findings into functional requirements, developing supportable recommendations for enhancement, and applying a wide range of methodologies and tools. In addition to the specialized experience stated above your resume must demonstrate one year of experience supporting the following competencies: 1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Installing and maintaining software and hardware, control current versions and future releases of applications software, and documenting the physical configuration of an information system. 2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Consulting with customers to refine functional requirements and translate functional requirements into design specifications. 3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Consulting with application developers and system owners to determine the effect on end user applications resulting from changes to the operating environment (e.g., new software or hardware installations). 4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Applying and troubleshooting security settings, anticipating future problems related to inability to apply security settings and providing recommendations to leadership as well as documentation of alternative courses of action if unable to implement expected settings. In lieu of specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, applicants may qualify based on education as follows:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

or

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
