The School of Language Studies at the Foreign Service Institute provides essential language and culture training to Department of State and other Federal agency personnel assigned to overseas posts and Stateside. The successful applicant will be a language educator with extensive knowledge of language learning theory, foreign language teaching methods and course design, applied linguistics, teacher training, language testing, educational technology, needs analysis, and training evaluation.
Duties
Serves as an expert point of contact responsible for one or more language training programs, designed, delivered, administered, and evaluated cost-effectively, with attention to results, organization, and coordination.
Leads and supervises a team of professionals responsible for student learning, course development, classroom instruction, and proficiency assessment.
Performs the full range of supervisory duties for direct-hire staff and students in training and provides technical monitoring of contractors.
Leads a team of instructors towards implementing well-balanced learning and instructional strategies and promoting and maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment.
Designs and implements innovative foreign language training courses and programs to enhance training effectiveness best to address the needs of the Department of State.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet ONE of the required basic entry qualification requirements described below:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
A. Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to this position;
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, OR in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, PLUS appropriate experience OR additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.

IN ADDITION to meeting one of the basic entry qualifications requirements listed above, you MUST have at least 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
Qualifying experience must demonstrate the following:
-Experience in leading a team of professionals responsible for student learning, course development, classroom instruction, or proficiency testing.
-Experience staying up to date with second language acquisition theories, adult education, and foreign language methodologies.
There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-13 position.
In addition, applicant's experience must also demonstrate that the candidate possesses the following qualities:
Ability to assign, review, and supervise the work of others;
Objectivity and fairness in judging people on their ability, and situations on the facts and circumstances;
Ability to adjust to change, work pressures, or difficult situations without undue stress;
Willingness to consider new ideas or divergent points of view; and
Capacity to "see the job through."
