About the Position: Serves as the Librarian (Medical Services) at Martin Army Community Hospital with the primary purpose to provide the full range of professional and technical library services. The Librarian plans, administers, and manages the hospital medical library operations, and serves as a resource of clinical and military medicine. The Librarian provides related health care literature for other activities and local units and/or neighboring community college and universities.
Duties
Plan library program in accordance with general policies, regulations, and guidelines.
Apply professional knowledge of librarianship to medical operations.
Conduct comprehensive and complex searches of medical literature.
Utilize automated library database for organization of available literature.
Cataloging materials based on National Library of Medicine (NLM) guidelines.
Advise patrons on the selection of books and periodicals within their medical field.
Interview and select candidates for vacant positions.
Provide performance standards and annual appraisals.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Librarian (Medical Sciences):
Degree: Completed one full academic year of graduate study in library science from an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts)
OR
A total of at least five years in a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. (NOTE: to qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes advising patrons on the selection of literature pertaining to their medical field; providing reference and research assistance on medical topics; utilizing automated literary databases for comprehensive literature searches; maintaining library collection in accordance with guidelines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Medical Library Information Sciences, Medical informatics.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
