The primary purpose of the Art Director position is to lead the visual identity that defines the brand. Reporting to the Brand Creative Director in the Office of Brand Strategy and Publishing within the division of Exhibitions, Programs, and Audience Engagement, the Art Director provides supervision to subordinate staff and oversees and executes visual design concept development and project management.

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1084-13. For the GS-13, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, leading a team to develop and execute brand and design strategies across media channels and digital platforms for a major organization or institution. For the GS-14, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-13 level in the Federal service, leading a team to develop and execute brand and design strategies across media channels and digital platforms for a major organization or institution. Incumbent must submit a digital design portfolio that includes demonstrated experience with brand implementation, graphic design, 3D design of museum exhibition and promotional materials, print and digital production, and project management, including familiarity with printing technologies for producing production-heavy ephemera, fine art books, advertising and marketing materials, banners, wayfinding signage, and conceptual design for architectural spaces. Demonstrated ability to independently manage internal partnerships and projects and lead problem-solving as creation and production issues arise. Demonstrated ability to communicate objectives and identify issues with internal partners, as well as with creative and production department staff. Exceptional problem-solving, organizational skills, and an entrepreneurial spirit for promoting the National Gallery brand.  Demonstrated experience with brand implementation, graphic design, 3D design of museum exhibition and promotional materials, print and digital production, including familiarity with printing technologies for producing production-heavy ephemera, fine art books, advertising, marketing materials, banners, wayfinding signage, and conceptual design for architectural spaces. Demonstrated supervisory and collaborative skills. Demonstrated management skills for setting goals and procedures to meet a set of objectives within a set time frame against inflexible deadlines.  "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures. Education

Education

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position. Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment.

Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above the high school level in one of the fields listed above is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.

General Experience (for GS-5 positions): Experience that demonstrated the skills and creativity needed to use the tools or equipment associated with the work. Because talent and creative ability are vital to successful work performance, samples of work or other suitable evidence of technical competence may be required. Unpaid experience that is pertinent should be credited based upon its relevance to the work of the particular position to be filled. To be qualifying, the work must have involved visual communication of information or the application of the principles of artistic design.

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position. This includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means.
