Duties

Perform radar approach control duties in all radar and non-radar positions. Utilize more than (20) instrument approach procedures and numerous specialized vectors and procedures to sequence/ separate airborne aircraft into/out of the terminal area. Operate radar and communications equipment to assure proper alignment, usability, and satisfactory status for control of air traffic. Responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of aircraft traffic in the Robert Gray Tower area of responsibility, Airport Traffic Area. Serves as a flight following controller in Cavazos Radio. Duties include flight following, staff advisories, weather warnings, range information, and safety advisories.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment Class IV flight physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Incumbent is subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must maintain personal physical fitness in accordance with AR 40-501.
  • Incumbent is subject to 24/7 rotating shifts.
  • Incumbent must certify in facilities of assignment within the time limits specified in AR 95-2.
  • Mission Essential position: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
  • Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
  • This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
  • Selectees inability to successfully pass or refusal to conduct the drug test may result in the job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process or being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.

Specialized Experience to Qualify for the GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes directing the movement of aircraft in flight and on runways/taxiway; controlling takeoff and landing of a variety of military and/or civilian aircraft utilizing a radar approach control facility. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Certifications: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must possess and continue to maintain a valid Control Tower Operator Certificate or FAA/DOD Credentialing and a valid Air Traffic Control Specialist Certificate or FAA/DOD Approach Control credentialing. (Note: In order to receive consideration for this position you MUST submit a copy of your Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) and Control Tower Operator certification.)
