About the Position: The Engineering Equipment Operator is located with the Directorate of Public Works, Operations & Maintenance Division at Fort Riley, KS.
Duties
Perform daily visual and operational checks or adjustments of equipment prior to and during operation on a continuing basis.

Operates equipment in a safe manner according to safety rules and regulations and uses the equipment properly to avoid damage.
Operate various types of heavy equipment (i.e. backhoes, motor graders, semi-tractor trailer, etc) over rough, hilly, and rocky terrain to dig, excavate, backfill, grade and move material.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common Engineering Equipment Operator duties such operation of a variety of vehicles and equipment to include motor graders, backhoes, bulldozers and semi-tractor trailers to move various types of materials and equipment. I can perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on equipment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

Physical Effort
The operator is constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operator is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions with larger pieces of equipment that require frequent adjustments under adverse operating conditions. Operator may be required to handle large pieces of equipment which may require frequent adjustments under adverse operating conditions. Occasionally the operator will be required to lift, carry, or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, and rolling surfaces. Operator is required to use hand tools such as grease gun, pliers, wrenches, screwdriver, oil can, etc. The operator is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning and subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Safety glasses, goggles, hard hats, safety shoes or boots, hip boots, and earplugs or earmuffs are used.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
