You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER in the Production Resources Department (Code 900), Production Resources Manager (Code 901), Service Shop (Code 990), of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will ensure workers under your leadership have the necessary plans, procedures, blueprints, instructions, tools, etc. to perform their work operations. You will perform a variety of tasks involved in the servicing and upkeep of vessels, and maintenance of radiologically controlled buildings. You will perform work, without close supervision, in at least two or more of the following trade practices: electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation. You will remove electrical fixtures and controls; rearrange old or install new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures; test circuits; measure, cut and bend wire and conduit to specified lengths and angles inside radiological controlled areas. You will operate and maintain Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems and ductwork/vent inside radiological controlled areas. You will plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. You will produce requested carpentry and woodworking products to support shipyard maintenance work. You will prepare and coating different types of surfaces by matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials and agents. You will prepare, pack and transfer radiological material in accordance with Norfolk naval Shipyard Nuclear Program. You will provide on the job training for up to 10 workers under your leadership, correct improper work methods, and ensure assigned work procedures are being followed.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Nuclear Quality Control (NQC) qualification.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a radiological worker qualification, and the inability to do so will result in removal.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • The incumbent must be able to operate a truck, tractor or vehicle.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD AND SUPERVISE. Such as: Experience applying concepts, methods and principles in in at least two or more of the following trade practices: electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation. Experience installing and operating electrical fixtures, wiring, and controls and reading and following wiring diagrams. Experience removing and replacing electrical fixtures and controls; making repairs; rearranging old or installing new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures; testing circuits; measuring, cutting, and bending wire and conduit to specified lengths and angles. Experience applying the principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, and refrigerant properties. Experience constructing, operating, and servicing a variety of ventilation systems, and possibly power sources, and cooling units. Experience installing and operating various supply, disposal, and utility systems and equipment, such as water and gas systems, fire sprinkler equipment, and water closets. Experience installing and operating various high-pressure piping systems, planning and laying out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. Experience applying construction techniques, operating general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to produce the requested finished product. Experience applying surface preparation and coating methods and techniques, matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials and agents. Experience installing and replacing materials used to insulate buildings/vessels and their mechanical systems. Experience providing subordinates the necessary plans, procedures, blueprints, instructions, tools, etc., to perform their work operations. Experience applying safety precautions, principals, and work methods associated with a maintenance mechanic. Experience using tools and equipment common to at least two or more of the following trade practices: electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation.
