THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION THAT REQUIRES MILITARY MEMBERSHIP. This National Guard position is for a MACHINIST, Position Description Number PDD2741000 and is part of the Mississippi National Guard.

Duties

As a MACHINIST, WG-3414-11, you will repair rotary wing aircraft and components, limited depot airframe repair, aircraft painting, major airframe repair, depot-level component repair, and component repair and management, as directed by Army Materiel Command (AMC). 1. Performs a variety of machine operations to manufacture, modify, and repair aircraft parts, support equipment, tools, and assemblies. Fabricates local manufactured items required for aircraft components. Work includes bending, cutting, forming, casting, cleaning, molding, welding, sawing, machining, Laser cutting and 3D printing additive manufacturing (AM). of shop machines, including the engine lathe, milling machine, radial or sensitive drill press, grinding machine, bench lathe, bench grinder, shaper, planner, saws, horizontal and vertical boring mill, and jig boring machine. Carries out work assignments that typically involve machining of surfaces at unusual or compound angles, items which require differential or compound indexing, multiple lead and various other nonstandard screw threads, helical and other types of gears, work threads and surfaces having closely related dimensions and/or complex configurations. Assist lower graded machinists with programming (CNC) using machine controller, CAD & CAM Software and operating machine, 3D Additive Manufacturing, 3D scanning software, cuts, turns, drills, bores, taps, reams, shapes, grinds, laps, and finishes items. Machines parts for instruments, armament, aircraft, equipment, etc. Works to close tolerances to prevent cumulative error or the affecting of optical or other properties or characteristics. Performs incidental precision bench and assembly work. Disassembles accessories. Uses hand tools, performs honing and lapping operations with machines; works to dimensional tolerances in achieving the dimensions and finishes required by specifications. 2. Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, jig borers, jig grinders, and radial drills. Grinds and sharpens tools. Selects tools, jigs, and fixtures required to achieve specific dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes. Sets up work in vises and between centers, uses chucks, standard faceplates, angle plate mountings, and collets. Uses mandrel and other machine tools attachments such as rotary vises, dividing heads, taper attachments, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, tapping attachments, and rotary tables. Adjusts and sets speeds of machinery, and determines coolants, lubricants, or abrasives to be used, considering the characteristics of both the machinery and the materials to be worked. Operates machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, grind, hone, and lap items. Performs precision handwork to finish, fit and assemble machined parts. Operates CNC 3 Axis & 4 Axis machines systems, 3D additive manufacturing machines, 3D Scanners, Laser cutters and engravers. Fully understands basic G-Codes and utilizes CAD/CAM Graphics programs System to operate and display programs for complex parts. 3. Plans and lays out work. Works from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or specifications, and frequently interprets or completes dimensions, tolerances, or specifications that are incomplete or incorrect. Makes special tools and fixtures, and performs production work of aircraft parts, and works to tolerances that are difficult to attain or hold. Fabricates special items that require nonstandard application of standard equipment. Often must develop and manufacture specialized tools to manufacture new parts, work with rare metal or special alloys, or achieve special finishes. Occasionally performs machine work that requires new or untried procedures, special skills or knowledge of tooling; types of coolants, machine feeds, and speeds for special operations. Performs machine setup requiring advanced shop mathematics. Determines procedures, tools, machines, equipment, and attachments to be used. Must use a high degree of judgment and skill to determine special setups and to improvise machines to perform special machining operations. Determines proper type and size of raw stock needed. Determines machine speeds and feeds necessary to attain required finishes and tolerances of .0002 or closer, taking into consideration the type of tools to be used and the material to be machined. 4. Conducts training for lower graded machinists, and traditional drilling service members assigned to the shop. Assists lower graded machinists in laying out work, and reviews work completed. May weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys such as aluminum, titanium, and other materials. May be required to be aircraft welder certified. 5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This is an indefinite position, tenure 3, with a time limit determined by the needs of the agency. Any permanent military technician who is selected for this position will become tenure 3. The selectee will receive the same benefits and entitlements as the tenure 1 employee, but will be considered tenure 3 for purposes of reduction in force. You can be terminated at any time with a 30-day notice. If a permanent resource becomes available, incumbent may be converted to a permanent appointment without competition. NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement. MILITARY MEMBERS WITH BONUSES: Upon acceptance of a military technician position military members who are currently receiving a military Reenlistment/Extension Bonus (REB) or GI Bill-SR Kicker may lose incentive eligibility and may be subject to termination or suspension of incentive (includes indefinite and temporary technicians on assignment for more than 180 days in any continuous 12-month period). GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with a basic knowledge of machining processes. Must have the ability to use drill presses, shapers, planers and other types of associated machine tools. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have 18 months of experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments. Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined. Skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.
