THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION THAT REQUIRES MILITARY MEMBERSHIP. This National Guard position is for a MACHINIST, Position Description Number PDD2742000 and is part of the Mississippi National Guard.

Duties

As a MACHINIST, WG-3414-10, you will support field maintenance in accordance with ARNG Aviation priorities. The AVCRAD maintenance activities ensure aircraft of the region are ready and available to support Federal and State missions. In addition, the AVCRAD performs National Maintenance Program (NMP) repair of rotary wing aircraft and components, limited depot airframe repair, aircraft painting, major airframe repair, depot-level component repair, and component repair and management, as directed by Army Materiel Command (AMC), and prioritized by the National Guard Bureau (NGB). MAJOR DUTIES: 1. Operates a variety of shop machines, including the engine lathe, milling machine, radial or sensitive drill press, grinding machine, bench lathe, bench grinder, shaper, planner, saws, horizontal and vertical boring mill, and jig boring machine. Assist with programming (CNC) using machine controller, CAD & CAM Software and operating machine, cuts, turns, drills, bores, taps, reams, shapes, grinds, laps, and finishes items. Machines parts for instruments, armament, aircraft, equipment, etc. Works to close tolerances to prevent cumulative error or the affecting of optical or other properties or characteristics. Performs incidental precision bench and assembly work. Disassembles accessories. Uses hand tools, performs honing and lapping operations with machines; works to dimensional tolerances in achieving the dimensions and finishes required by specifications. Files, scrapes, reams, buffs, polishes, hand taps, cuts threads, grinds, etc. Based off of supervisory guidance uses various bench-mounted and hand-held powered and non-powered tools such as drills, reamers, and buffers in achieving this goal. 2. Assists with setting up, programming (CNC) using machine controller, CAD & CAM Software and operating machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal, boring mills, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, thread grinders, radial drills, jig borers, jig grinders, hobbing machines, thread grinders, gear generators, 3D printers, 3D Scanners, Laser engravers/cutters and numerically controlled machine tools. Maintains equipment in both machine shop and welding shop. Fabricates items for local support. Modifies tools or equipment as necessary. Replaces parts, adjusts and performs operator maintenance. 3. Collaborates with higher graded personnel on the planning and interpreting of blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications. Determines requirements for work procedures, types of machines and equipment, and proper types of metal for application. Lays out, by measuring and scribing lines, arcs, circles, angles, tapers, center distances, and location points at various angles and in different planes on a work piece involving a multiplicity of interrelated dimensions. Uses shop mathematics and handbook formulas in making computations. Uses dial indicators, height gages level protractor, center head protractor surface and angle plates, sine bar, Johansson gage blocks, taper and level gages, vernier height and depth gages, comparators, vernier calipers, inside and outside micrometers, and other such devices. Determines work procedures, machines, tools, equipment and attachments to be used; determines, proper type and size of raw stock needed; determines machine speeds and feeds necessary to attain required finishes and tolerances taking into consideration the type of tools to be used and the material to be machined. 4. Manufactures, repairs, tests, inspects, and reworks metal devices and parts used with and on aircraft and related aircraft maintenance equipment. Welds various metals and alloys using such processes as heli-arc (Tungsten Inert Gas), arc-welding process, oxyacetylene, and resistance welding processes. Welds butt, lay, tee, and corner joints in flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions, depending on welding process and requirement. Shapes and forms metal using various metal working machines. Assists with assignments which require special adaptation and extension of the use of conventional machine tools and the use of specialized and nonconventional machine tools such as jig borers, jig grinders, hobbing machine, thread grinders, gear generators, and numerically controlled machine tools. Heat-treats metal parts to specification requirements. Conducting on-the-job training. Evaluates training effectiveness. Required to serve as requested on Maintenance CONTACT teams throughout the supported area. Participates in conducting the necessary safety program for the function. 5. Performs other duties as assigned.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. MILITARY MEMBERS WITH BONUSES: Upon acceptance of a military technician position military members who are currently receiving a military Reenlistment/Extension Bonus (REB) or GI Bill-SR Kicker may lose incentive eligibility and may be subject to termination or suspension of incentive (includes indefinite and temporary technicians on assignment for more than 180 days in any continuous 12-month period). GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with a basic knowledge of machining processes. Must have the ability to use drill presses, shapers, planers and other types of associated machine tools. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have 18 months of experience performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments. Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined. Skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.
