Carries out work assignments that typically involve machining of surfaces at unusual or compound angles, items which require differential or compound indexing, multiple lead and various other nonstandard screw threads, helical and other types of gears, work threads and surfaces having closely related dimensions and/or complex configurations. Assist lower graded machinists with programming (CNC) using machine controller, CAD & CAM Software and operating machine, 3D Additive Manufacturing, 3D scanning software, cuts, turns, drills, bores, taps, reams, shapes, grinds, laps, and finishes items. Machines parts for instruments, armament, aircraft, equipment, etc. Works to close tolerances to prevent cumulative error or the affecting of optical or other properties or characteristics. Performs incidental precision bench and assembly work. Disassembles accessories. Uses hand tools, performs honing and lapping operations with machines; works to dimensional tolerances.
2. Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, jig borers, jig grinders, and radial drills. Grinds and sharpens tools. Selects tools, jigs, and fixtures required to achieve specific dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes. Sets up work in vises and between centers, uses chucks, standard faceplates, angle plate mountings, and collets. Uses mandrel and other machine tools attachments such as rotary vises, dividing heads, taper attachments, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, tapping attachments, and rotary tables. Adjusts and sets speeds of machinery, and determines coolants, lubricants, or abrasives to be used, considering the characteristics of both the machinery and the materials to be worked. Operates machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, grind, hone, and lap items. Performs precision handwork to finish, fit and assemble machined parts. Operates CNC 3 Axis & 4 Axis machines systems, 3D additive manufacturing machines, 3D Scanners, Laser cutters and engravers. Fully understands basic G-Codes and utilizes CAD/CAM Graphics programs System to operate and display programs for complex parts. Uses various bench-mounted and hand-held powered and non-powered tools such as files, drills, reamers, and buffers. Performs heat treating welding, and soldering.
3. Plans and lays out work. Works from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or specifications, and frequently interprets or completes dimensions, tolerances, or specifications that are incomplete or incorrect. Makes special tools and fixtures, and performs production work of aircraft parts, and works to tolerances that are difficult to attain or hold. Fabricates special items that require nonstandard application of standard equipment. Often must develop and manufacture specialized tools to manufacture new parts, work with rare metal or special alloys, or achieve special finishes. Occasionally performs machine work that requires new or untried procedures, special skills or knowledge of tooling; types of coolants, machine feeds, and speeds for special operations. Performs machine setup requiring advanced shop mathematics. Determines procedures, tools, machines, equipment, and attachments to be used.
4. Conducts training for lower graded machinists, and traditional drilling service members assigned to the shop. Assists lower graded machinists in laying out work, and reviews work completed.
