You will serve as a INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/OCEANOGRAPHER in the Ocean Projects Department (N9), Ocean Collections Division (N94) of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will implement new techniques for the processing of acoustic data from autonomous platforms within NAVOCEANO's operational and production environment. You will plan and perform investigations to test and evaluate new software technology and determine which are suitable for operational use. You will make formal presentations at senior staff levels and at national and international scientific and technical conferences as an authoritative source. You will be the senior technical expert concerning autonomous vehicles and technology. You will create detailed budget estimates and actively track expenditures in support of reimbursable field operations. You will implement new techniques in the area of environmental and tactical data visualization. You will perform Contracting Officer Representative (COR) duties in accordance with established policies/ procedures and the COR appointment letter.

• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• You will be required to perform occasional sea duty. At-sea transfers via helicopter or small craft to shore sites are sometimes required.
• This is a bargaining unit position.
• Extensive travel required by both shore-based and sea duty, particularly overseas, may result in physical and mental stress due to long travel periods, interrupted sleep patterns, and time lag.
• The employee is required to work over the side or on the stern of a ship, launching and recovering heavy objects (up to 8000 lbs.) under hazardous conditions.
• Field assignments consist of conducting Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) survey operations aboard TAGS-class ships and other contract survey vessels of opportunity.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience using autonomous collection systems and mission planning techniques to map ocean and environmental data into mathematical animations. Experience interpreting and implementing data sets that support shallow water ocean modeling and ocean prediction products; Experience conducting surveys and research using data from Remote Environmental Monitoring Units (REMUS) AUVs. Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Oceanography Series 1360

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.

   OR

2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
