About the Position: Red River Army Depot (RRAD) is located in northeast Texas. The depot's enormous maintenance mission includes the repair, rebuild, overhaul and conversion of tactical wheeled vehicles. Duties

Makes classification/serviceability determinations, in process and final acceptance inspections of complete vehicles and their major components during the process. Performs visual, auditory, operational and dimensional inspections of complete vehicles including a wide variety of major components/systems such as large engines, transmissions, steering assemblies, electrical systems, power trains, etc. Exercises a substantial degree of inspection judgment when clearly defined inspection guides are not available. Investigates causes of critical or major defects and assures corrective action is taken.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance for access to Depot Production Computer System.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position requires heavy lifting up to 44 lbs.
  • This position is subject to Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel up to 10%, and may be subject to (TDY) on short notice CONUS and OCONUS.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-deployment physical examination and an annual deployment examination thereafter.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid regular or official U.S. Passport.
  • Temporary promotion may be made or extended up to a maximum of five years.
  • Time Limited Detail NTE may be made or extended at management discretion.
  • Temporary reassignment may be made or extended at management discretion.
  • Position may be converted to permanent without further competition.

Ability to perform common Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Inspector duties including installing components or replacements on heavy mobile equipment vehicles; reviewing guides such as inspection standards, schematics, and technical manuals to understand the functions of parts or systems; and conducting functional testing of major mechanic systems of heavy mobile equipment vehicles. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To InspectAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Trouble ShootingUse of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: Required to work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching is required. Sometimes works on top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently carries items weighing in excess of 44 pounds. Required to push, pull, turn and position parts, assemblies' equipment, and tools. Lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Working Conditions: Most of the work is done inside where it is drafty and noisy, and fumes from vehicles are usually present. Frequently stands on hard surface for long periods of time. Occasionally works outside, sometimes in bad weather. Must be licensed to operate all types of heavy mobile vehicles. During road tests is subject to road hazards and testing course hazards. Dirt, dust, and grease are frequently present. Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns and strains.
