Incumbent works as the Supervisor over the Transportation Section of Engineering Service for the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, under the supervision of the M&O Supervisor over the Transportation Section. The supervisor is responsible for the facilities fleet of government owned vehicles for Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started, e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led. Working along with other workers and setting the pace. Demonstrating proper work methods. Maintain vehicle estimates, modifications, maintenance and /or repairs of Medical Center assigned fleet vehicles. Obtaining needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work. Maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders). Seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy. Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Utilizing automated computer software for day-to-day operations, such as but not limited to: Fleet Commander, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, VISTA, VATAS, etc. Tracks attendance and leave usage. Refers leave requests to the timekeeper. Urges/advises resolution to informal employee complaints within delegated limits. When appropriate refers complaints to supervisor. Responsible for the facilities fleet of government owned vehicles Develops works schedules and assigns to personnel based on priority required per service needs. Manages all records for government owned motor vehicles operated by the facility. Plans use of subordinate workers equipment, facilities, materials on a week-to-week or month-to-month basis, establishes deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, and plans work assignments based on general work schedules, methods, and policies set by the Maintenance & Operations (M&O) Supervisor. Motor Vehicle Operator Duties including: Work at this level involves driving a motor coach equipped with a wheelchair lift and a passenger capacity of 29 ambulatory and 8 wheelchair seating positions (36,000 pounds GVW). Motor coach is used on scheduled recreation trips within the station and off the station; also drives a 20-passenger bus (16,000-pound GVW) during vacancies. Incumbent operates vehicles with a GVW of up to 36,000 GVW to plow snow and salt streets on the station on a regular recurring basis. Ensures that passengers follow safety rules and regulations. Loads passengers, wheelchairs and trip materials and equipment, ensuring patient safety and properly distributed balanced loads to prevent shifting and breakage while in transit. Performs operator safety inspections as specified in Pre-Trip Inspection Log (vehicle specific), minor maintenance, cleaning and washing vehicles. Completes trip tickets and safety inspection records. Performs other duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed outdoors, and the incumbent is regularly exposed to extremes of temperature, inclement weather, rain and snow. In addition to the physical effort described drivers at this level exert moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads or larger numbers of people than vehicles at the grade 6 level. These actions are necessary to control vehicles and equipment, and occasionally to lift heavy items of up to 50 lbs. Individual assists loading and unloading patients from the transport.
