This position is in Police Services in a Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) and supported catchment area. The primary purpose of this position is providing courtesy rides and assistance to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the Charlie Norwood VAMC campus to include Uptown and Downtown division.

Duties

Major Duties: Operates vehicles such as shuttle carts/golf carts and vans which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds). Assist veterans, visitors, and employees enter and exit their parking space if need help as they make rounds to transport them from there cars to the facility entrance. Greets veterans entering the VA parking areas, providing directions to veterans looking for areas to park. Providing assistance to veterans with mobility issues. Assists veterans with medical equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs. Escorts veterans from the parking lot to the entrance of the facility. Assists veterans with finding parking in all patient parking areas throughout the VA facility Uptown and Downtown Division. Assists staff with directions and knowledge of all staff parking areas. Provides education on obtaining an employee parking placard for new employees. Provides education to veterans, staff and visitors on all parking polices for VA controlled parking areas. Direct veterans to the parking facility exit to relieve minor traffic congestions and keep the paths within the parking structure clear for walking veterans. Calls law enforcement authorities if they notice suspicious behavior or traffic jams. Performs other duties assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. OR 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: While operating motor vehicles, the position exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May need to exert effort to make emergency repairs, such as changing a flat tire. Frequently, bends, lifts and carries equipment, supplies or materials up to 40 pounds. Work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending and similar activities and occasional lifting and carrying of heavy objects of 50 pounds or less such as temporary traffic signs and stations. Call back and emergency overtime may be required. Callback and emergency overtime may be required during periods of Increased National Threat Levels or other local Incidents. The mental stress of the position may be higher than the physical stress due to the necessity of dealing with persons who are often unhappy about traffic and parking problems. Duties are performed primarily In parking lots and traffic lanes with exposure to heat, humidity, cold, rain, ice and exhaust fumes. Incumbent Is required to, wear a uniform and a traffic control vest. Work is executed mostly outside operating vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads and on the facility campus. The position is exposed to the possibility of traffic hazards. The position is exposed to dirt, fumes, grease and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falls and broken bones when loading and unloading the vehicle. Safety equipment and uniforms will be provided by Police Services. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. Ability to do the work without normal supervision the work of Motor Vehicle Operator (Screen-Out) -AND- Possess a valid state driver's license.
