This position is in Police Services in a Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) and supported catchment area. The primary purpose of this position is providing courtesy rides and assistance to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the Charlie Norwood VAMC campus to include Uptown and Downtown division.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to: Maintains a clean driving record, and follows all federal, state and local traffic laws. Operates the shuttle bus, vans and shuttle carts. continual care and attention are required to avoid accidents. Exercises caution for safe operation of motor vehicles and transportation of passengers. Adheres to the installation traffic rules and safe operating practices for moving vehicles. Experienced in driving on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedule over public roads (or equivalent) at highway speeds. Maneuvers vehicles through congested areas exercising caution when backing to load or unload at docks, ramps or similar locations. Recognizes developing maintenance problems when conducting an inspection of their vehicle and report technical problems to their supervisor. Aware of regulations, policies, procedures, programs, manuals and other established guidelines relating to the operation of motor vehicles. Carries valid credentials as required by state and local laws and as required by the VA and GSA. Maintains and organizes work areas in manner of cleanliness. Understands verbal and written instructions and must have the ability to read, write and speak the English language to the extent of interpreting written and oral instructions and giving instructions to shuttle passengers. Checks vehicles for water, oil, gas, air pressure in tires and ascertains that all assigned vehicles are in proper operating condition. Report to work at the prescribed time and adhere to times allotted to lunch and break periods. Display cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organizations missions and goals. Determines the manner and sequence of loading cargo to achieve load balance and adequate protection for fragile vehicles. Recognizes what requires special handling for safeguarding and safekeeping purposes. Keeps shuttle buses, vans and carts fueled and ready for use at all times. Knowledge of operator's manual for assigned vehicle and the skill to apply such knowledge to particular situations. Work Schedule: 6:00am - 2:30pm; 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work is primarily outside in all kinds of weather, but may be performed in all areas of the hospital environment, including working outside in hot and cold weather where it is often dusty and dirty and in the hospital in medical, surgical, and psychiatric wards and research areas. Incumbent is exposed to extremes of hot and cold temperatures and all types of weather conditions while working outdoors. It may be hot, cold, humid, wet, outdoors, indoors, underground in storage tanks, in a ditch, etc. Work outdoors may, at times, be in inclement weather. Operating the shuffle carts requires special care and attention to avoid serious injuries. The position is responsible for carrying out instructions and performing work assigned in a safe manner so as not to endanger himself/herself and/or others. Personal protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, etc., must be worn when conditions justify their use.
