This position is located at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta GA, Engineering Service. The position is a Motor Vehicle Operator in the Transportation Section. The Duties include the operation of specially equipped vehicles used in the transportation of patients, staff, and materials between divisions and other cities for the Medical Center.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES
Operates Vehicles between 26,000-32,000
Must possess a valid state issued Class C Driver's License (CDL), with (P) passenger endorsement, issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Operates vehicles that have an approximate gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more that 26,000 pounds not to exceed GVW of 32,000 pound
Operates and performs operator maintenance on one or more motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks and trash removal trucks
Drives up to 44 passenger bus transporting patients and/or employees on out of town trips and/or divisions
Drives up to 20 passenger wheelchair buses; uses specially equipped with hydraulic/electrical systems operated by the driver to raise and lower a wheelchair platform; wheelchair patients enter and exit this the with the drivers assistance utilizing the lift
Drives trucks up to 2 and 1/2 ton capacity hauling various materials on and off the Medical Center campus
Must have the skill and knowledge to operate these vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways, narrow country roads, and on steep winding grades
Operates Vehicles up to 10,000 pounds
Drives van (up to 16 passengers), station wagons, sedans and pickups as required for transporting patients patient articles.
Records Vehicle Data
Responsible for compiling all data pertaining to vehicle operation including mileage, fuel used, maintenance costs and repair cost; records all required vehicle data into FAST, CARS, and underutilized vehicle reports
Dispatches drivers and vehicles as required, documents patient transportation requests, verifies driver records are completed in vehicles when turning in vehicles, and properly secures keys and credit cards
Work Schedule: 10:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. (Hours subject to change)

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Requirements: Work requires reaching, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Incumbent will be required to assist patients with a variety of medical conditions and/or disabilities. Associated duties require stooping, bending, lifting, climbing, and securing patients, oxygen, and wheelchairs with appropriate securing devices. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier. Must follow prescribed safety procedures using appropriate lifting methods and body mechanics for heavy lifting or moving of heavy objects. Must be able to drive for a minimum of a four-hour period and stay mentally alert. If driver realizes they are not mentally alert, they must use good judgment in pulling over at the first safe area, road- checking vehicle with walk-around inspection, and continue driving as soon as possible. Incumbent must pass a VA Physical and adhere to all VA and DOT drug and alcohol testing and guidelines.
Working Conditions: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. Must have ability to drive in rural areas, very congested Metropolitan traffic and/or construction zones. Must safely handle patients, both stretcher and wheelchair, in loading and unloading from vans and buses. The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Shift work may be required. May be required to work overtime after normal working hours providing it is an emergency or their services are needed to transport patients.
