About the Position: The 597th Transportation Brigade is the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command's global surface transportation expert focused on U.S. Northern Command areas of responsibility. The Brigade Headquarters is located at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA.
Duties
Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set priorities, and establish schedules for work based on capabilities of employees.
Develop and recommend procedural changes in cargo distribution patterns associated with new transportation trends.
Provide technical transportation and contractual advice and assistance on matters related to disruptions in carrier service for international cargo movement.
Manage transportation services for a variety of cargo types using both commercial and US Government intermodal transportation systems.
Coordinate transportation services from port to port or inland origins.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has been designated as “Key” and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- The incumbent may be required to work nonstandard duty hours (e.g., shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime-both scheduled and unscheduled).
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
- This position requires pre-employment financial disclosure and annually thereafter in accordance with DoD Directive 5500-7-R.
- A one year supervisory probation period to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties may be required, unless previously completed.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Directing and implementing booking procedures that are used for determining the inland routing, port selection, carrier selection, and ordering of ocean carrier shipping services for DOD cargo; 2) Providing technical guidance on ocean carrier contracts and carrier capabilities for cost effective port cargo movements; and/or 3) Resolving complex transportation problems specifically dealing with the booking of intermodal transportation services. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
