Duties
Maintains periodic surveillance over safety and occupational health program functions, providing
advice, guidance, and assistance on specific problem areas and recommends or implements corrective
actions.
Conducts safety and occupational health inspections, and mishap and near-miss investigations to
identify uncontrolled hazards, verify hazard corrections, monitor the effectiveness of existing hazard
controls (next bullet)
and assure compliance with existing OSHA regulations.
Implements safety and occupational health programs, including program management, mishap trend
analysis and reporting.
Direct and perform activities involved in the compilation, consolidation, analysis, maintenance,
presentation, and dissemination of safety data to assure the quality, effectiveness of the numerous safety
and health programs, (next bullet)
demonstrate compliance, measure performance, identify trends and alert both
government and private personnel to hazards and established controls.
Coordinates with supervisors and managers to determine needs for safety training and develops and/or
assists in the development of training courses needed.

Qualifications
To qualify for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, your resume must support:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
Apply safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements.
Review, evaluate and advise on the wide and varied range of safety and occupational health activities inherent in the agencies Safety and Occupational Health Programs.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Demands
The work requires periods of strenuous physical exertion, such as long periods of climbing, crouching, or crawling around and between operating equipment while carrying moderately heavy equipment (30 pounds or less) and while wearing protective clothing. There are sedentary periods of extensive desk work, such as that required for the preparation of reports for customers and regulators, data analyses, review of testing results, and the preparation of contract specifications.
Work Environment
Work involves sporadic and potential exposure to potentially dangerous or hazardous situations, such as working with toxic chemicals; working at great heights under temperature extremes; or working around areas devoid of oxygen, containing harmful bacteria/molds, or emitting hazardous chemicals. A variety of health and safety precautions are necessary as two or more potentially hazardous conditions may occur simultaneously. This exposure requires the use of protective clothing and
equipment, including respirators, safety shoes, safety helmets, and ear protectors. Work involves minimal exposure to discomforts such as noise, temperature extremes, adverse weather conditions, and incident (emergency) scenes.
Education
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
