These positions serve as Forest Supervisors who are responsible for the management, protection, and development of the Forest resources on the assigned National Forest.
Duty stations for positions filled through this announcement are located at a Forest Service office. Final determination of the duty location will be made at the time of the job offer. Positions will be filled at the GS-14 or GS-14/15 or GS-15 depending on location. Refer to the Education section below for more details.
Duties
Duties are listed at the GS-15 grade level.
Recommends the distribution of annual program funding and program priorities for a resource management program. Assures that budget and financial requirements are sufficient to meet an organization's short and long term milestones and/or objectives.
Provides program oversight of comprehensive management programs, such as development, management and/or protection of resources, for an assigned location.
Provides leadership in risk management and safety of personnel engaged in incident management and/or other program implementations.
Performs supervisory duties more than 25% of the time, including establishing and communicating guidelines and performance requirements to employees, conducting formal performance reviews, and establishing production or quality standards.

Requirements

- Subject to one-year supervisory probationary period (unless prior service is creditable). New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required new supervisory training program before the end of their probationary period.

For the GS-14: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: providing counsel to higher organizational levels concerning program issues and their current and anticipated effects; and/or exercising direct program responsibilities that included program development, planning, budgeting, and identifying workforce and organizational needs to establish and meet priorities; and/or developing and sustaining relationships with one or more of the following: external partners, members of the public, or representatives of agencies or tribal governments to anticipate and resolve conflicts and issues.
For the GS-15: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: providing expert counsel to higher organizational levels concerning regional or state-wide program issues and their current and anticipated effects; and/or exercising direct program responsibilities that included regional or state-wide program development, planning, budgeting, and identifying workforce and organizational needs to establish and meet priorities; and/or developing and sustaining relationships with external partners, members of the public, state or federal agencies, and tribal governments to anticipate and resolve conflicts and issues.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
