The incumbent is assigned to the Mental Health Division and serves as the Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) and facilitates implementation of suicide prevention strategies within the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center and its community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC), to ensure that all appropriate measures are being taken to prevent suicide in our patient population.

Duties

Represents the facility's suicide prevention program in contacts with the agency, Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN) 12, and the public. Serves as an advisor to program/division managers, facility leadership and other medical center staff concerning suicide prevention strategies for the Medical Center, individual patients and for the veteran community as a whole. Monitors and responds to all consults received from the Veterans Crisis Line to assure timely access to care and follow-up for patients in crisis. Monitors appointments and coordinates enhanced care as needed. Provides feedback, advice, and counsel to clinicians related to patient issues and/or documentation and program requirements. Establishes and maintains effective channels of communication with numerous and varied programs. Tracks and analyzes data to evaluate and enhance the quality of services provided. Coordinates/Provides education to providers, veterans, families, and members of the community about risk factors and warning signs for suicide. Engages in an on-going training program for staff to assure awareness of options during crisis situations. Ensures contacts are made with veterans considered to be at high risk for suicide, including an established U.S. mail contact in order to provide an 'enhanced care' model of prevention and other related interventions as directed from the Office Mental Health and Suicide Prevention national program office. Serves as a member of committees and workgroups as designated. Reports all suicide deaths at their facility, including the submission of a variety of reports to the National Suicide Prevention Program and initiation and completion of Issue Briefs related to suicidal events. Maintains complete, accurate, timely, and confidential medical record documentation according to VA, Joint Commission, and CARF policies/regulations. Provides consultation and guidance to colleagues, models effective social work practice skills, teaches or provides orientation to less experienced staff, develops innovations in practice interventions, and provides clinical supervision for social work licensure or certification as needed. Supports and assists with research activities related to suicidology. Performs clinical social work functions and specialized clinical social work functions as approved on the incumbent's clinical social work scope of practice application. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: Education: Must have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. (COPY OF LICENSE REQUIRED) GS-12 Grade Determination: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring. Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program. Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s). Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
