You will serve as a SHIPFITTER in the Shipfitter Shop (11A), Hull Division (TRF 310), Repair Department (TRF-300) of TRIREFFAC KINGS BAY.

Duties

You will lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install various metal structural parts of submarines; and perform a variety of related duties to support the refit operations. You will shape metal pieces and assemble components to form required submarine parts. You will install and fit structural parts on submarine utilizing services for other trades. You will open and close out all tanks for access at dry dock. You will perform minor removal of sound dampening and hull insulation. You will lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install various sheet metal structural parts of submarines.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE JOB WITHOUT NORMAL SUPERVISION: 1) Serves as a Shipfitter responsible for laying out, fabricating, assembling, and installing various metal structural parts of submarines. 2) Works from blueprints and templates to lay out submarine structural parts (for example watertight closures, shell, deck and bulkhead plates, I-beams, channel bar and angle bar). 3) Installs and fits structural parts on submarines utilizing services of other trades. 4) Shapes metal pieces and assembles components to form required submarine parts. 5) Rolls, bends, flanges, cuts, and shapes plates, beams, and other heavy metal structural shapes using various shop machinery. 6) Locates positions of pieces by reference to water lines, center-lines, buttock lines, blueprints, etc. 7) Possess knowledge of equipment, structures, materials, etc. associated with submarine shipfitting operations. 8) Maintains the ability to interpret instructions, specifications, blueprints, etc. to perform job duties. 9) Possess the ability to use and maintain tools and equipment related to the shipfitter trade. 10) Removes and repairs or replaces damaged parts of ship structures. 11) Lines parts up for welding or riveting, installing temporary fasteners as required. 12) Opens and closes out all tanks for access at dry dock. 13) Overhauls submarine hatches and doors. 14) Sets parts in proper position, aligns, and adjusts using optical squares, jacks, turnbuckles, shoving saddles, clips, wedges, and hammers.
