About the Position: This position is with the Department of Surgery, Ophthalmology Service located at Womack Army Medical Center, carrying out a variety of specialized procedures to include examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatment of refractive errors of the eye treatment procedures.
Certified Ophthalmic Technician or Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Certificate required.

Duties
Performs preoperative and post-operative evaluations of surgical patient.
Attend periodic meetings of department staff to review and evaluate the care and treatment provided to patients.
Performs ophthalmic photography and retinal angiography.
Operate and take interior segment photos with digital imaging systems.
Prepares the operating room for surgical staff.
Perform direct patient care by compiling information concerning the patient's eyes.
Obtains ocular and medical history of patients.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires a NACI background check.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of physical examination prior to entrance on duty.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Incumbent must be a Certified Ophthalmic Technician or Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Certificate required.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- The position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 97005, 23 October 1996, which requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B immunizations and Tuberculin testing unless exempted by physician.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing diagnostic eye tests; assisting surgeon during eye surgery and/or procedures; preparing treatment plan for post-op patient care, administering appropriate medications under surgeons directions and maintain patient ocular and general medical history. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Ophthalmic Technician
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
