Duties
Serve as a paraprofessional member of the surgical team in the performance of scrub and/or circulating operating room duties with primary emphasis in one or more surgical specialties.
Perform duties in support of the operating room service by providing support for surgical procedures ranging from routine, complex, high risk to trauma procedures.
Provide health care to all age group (infants, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric served by the operating room.
Serve as a scrub technician assembling, selecting and organizing required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedure
Ensure surgical procedures are in accordance with operative work sheets, and physician preferences cards.
Confer surgical procedure with charge nurse.
Pass instruments to the surgeon during surgical procedures by anticipating the surgeon's needs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires to work on-call.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing assistance to the medical surgical team (e,g., surgeon, anesthetist, or registered nurse) in the operating room performing the following: preparing and screening patients for surgery; passing medical instruments or drugs or supplies during surgery. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
