About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types.
Duties
Operates a variety of engineering equipment such as pay loaders, tractors, bulldozers, refuse compactor, woodchipper, compost mixer skid steer loaders and forklifts, at the construction debris site.
Performs minor maintenance and repairs on refuse containers, such as touch up painting, repairing doors and rods, and replacing lids.
Follow established trade practices in performance of work with completed work inspected for conformance to work orders, proper workmanship, and compliance with safety and traffic regulations.
Operates bulldozer and pay loader to perform excavating, compacting, salvaging, covering and grading operations.
Operates woodchipper to chip wood products that are used for compost and other organic operations.
The employee, in the event of a flat or damaged tire, removes and installs tires on assigned vehicles using shop equipment. For repairs made at the breakdown site, the employee assists personnel responding to the call.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid Government Driver's License to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain, for the duration of employment in this position, valid Forklift Operator's License.
- Incumbent of this position must submit to a pre-employment drug screening and random testing thereafter.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Incumbent is required to wear protective gear.
- This is an inclement weather essential position.
- Incumbent is required to successfully pass the Army approved Defensive Driving course.
- This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
- Selectee’s inability to successfully pass or refusal to conduct the drug test may result in the job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process or subsequently being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.
- You may be required to sign a Statement of Understanding if you are selected for this position.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common Engineering Equipment Operator duties such as driving dump trucks, loaders or tractors to haul sand, stone and/or other aggregates; I can dispose of recyclable materials using equipment such as loaders or refuse compactor, and I can operate a variety of mowing equipment (i.e. tractors with attachments, and forklifts). - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
To meet the basic eligibility for this position, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.

This position requires a valid Class B New York State Commercial Driver's License (CDL). You MUST upload a copy of your certification with your application. Physical effort: Heavy physical effort in constantly reaching, bending, turning and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs. Considerable strain caused by constant vibration and jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather, exposed to injury due to possibility of equipment overturning. Subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and exhaust fumes.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
