About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Utilize engineer equipment to clean up incidental spills on Fort Drum and at Reserve Centers as required. Operates engineering equipment such as front-end loaders, graders, excavators, and bulldozers, close to buildings, trees, power poles and underground utility lines. Provide Guidance to workers regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives (e.g. technical orders). Operates powered snow blowers equipped with a separate power unit which activates the augers, impellers and chute. Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as front-end loader, grader, excavator, and bulldozer to construct, maintain, and repair roads, excavate fill in low spots, move earth, sand, gravel, clear brush, trees, rock, and remove ice and snow.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position may require overtime and /or on call emergency work.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain, for the duration of employment in this position, a valid Government Driver's License.
  • Frequently lifts and carries items weighing 50 pounds and occasionally heavier.
  • This position is an Inclement Weather Essential position; incumbent must make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator Leader without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Engineering Equipment Operator Leader tasks, including operating large trucks such as dump trucks, snowplows, water trucks, and chemical trucks. I am skilled in leading tasks that involve the operation of engineering equipment used to maintain roads and grounds, such as payloaders, snowplows, tractors with attachments, and graders and rollers used to excavate, backfill, grade, level, tamp and/or pile. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle)Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)Ability To Lead or SuperviseOperation of Motor VehiclesReliability and Dependability as a Engineering Equipment OperatorWork Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Selective Placement Factor: This position requires the incumbent to possess a New York State (NYS) Class A Commercial Driver's License.
