About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is a unique and beautiful area. Located in Northern New York, Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Perform operational/organizational maintenance work on Stationary Infantry Target Systems, Infantry Moving Target Carriers, Stationary Armor Targets, Armor Moving Target Carriers. Perform target and device, grounds maintenance and provide facility use assistance in direct support of military training within the training ranges and facilities. Inspect, test, service, adjust, install, replace, clean, troubleshoot, repair and test target systems, and ancillary equipment to the target system i.e., hit sensor, thermal target silhouette, and special effect systems, and video systems. Repair and adjust one or more types of electric current converters, inverters designed to support thermal target system. Maintain lead acid batteries. Test, charge and install to portable target systems. Arm, disarms and conduct misfire procedures on Armor Tank Kill Simulator. Program and operate computer systems supporting target scenario operation and scoring. Consolidate/edit and prepare recorded training activity as requested by unit provided Observer Controller. Perform minor repair to wooden structures, target silhouettes and masonry walls.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5 % of the time.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work an irregular tour of duty that may span a 7 day 24 hour operation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess or able to obtain and maintain a Government Driver's License.

Initiating appropriate service orders to obtain maintenance support and performing operator level maintenance to gasoline and diesel generators. Recording an after action review and make multiple copies of take home packages for the training unit. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Items weighing in excess of 90 pounds normally involve more than one person. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, working in cramped positions and climbing up and down ladders and steep flights of stairs (80 to 100 feet). Will work on roof tops up to 3 stories high with flat roofs and 2 stories high for sloped roof, on high lifting devices supporting work platforms up to 40 feet high, and in confined underground spaces (mock sewer systems) and manholes. Must possess normal depth perception and new normal color vision. Requires prolonged standing on concrete floors and walking over rough and uneven terrain. Long term walking across severe terrain is considered normal. Must possess near normal hearing to achieve minimum standards for use of radio equipment, conduct coordination with others in inside and outside environments, hear commands given during firing of pyrotechnics and employment of sound systems supporting training and to hear abnormal sounds that may indicate a malfunction or failure of equipment or an impending safety threat. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside during all types of weather conditions. Works around and with electrical power supplies from 12 volt DC, 120 VAC, 480 VAC to 3-phase high voltage current. Works inside in areas, which may be dusty, drafty, noisy and unheated. Stands on concrete and gravel floors, and works outside in rough terrain. Works around military combat, and tactical wheel and track vehicles and heavy equipment during range and urban combat facilities training operations. Exposed to danger of loud noises, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies, and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operating remotely controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns, electrical shock, falls, vehicle accidents, snake bites, skin irritants from poisonous plants and explosives. Hearing protective devices, hard hats with face shield and other safety equipment and devices are issued or readily available for use. Required to enter impact areas containing unexploded munitions. Environmental differential pay is authorized when the incumbent is required to load or unload Hoffman charges, deploy other electrically detonated explosive charges, and/or to work in areas generating a threat from unstable dud munitions.
