About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Replace components for electronic systems such as circuit card assemblies, fuses, resistors, capacitors, transistors, diodes, and relays. Set logic address codes on electronic target devices to ensure proper communication with the target control system. Install electronic target systems such as Stationary Infantry Targets (SIT), Moving Infantry Target Carriers (MIT) and hard wired and radio frequency (RF) communication systems used to support live fire training. Monitor and maintain air handling systems, carbon monoxide sensors, range baffling and bullet traps. Read and interpret electrronic schematics, diagrams and manuals to troubleshoot and repair electronic systems.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must successfully complete pre-placement and annual medical examinations.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • Business travel is required 5% of the time.
  • This position may require shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays or special occasions.
  • This position has been designated as an Inclement Weather position.
  • This position may require use of protective clothing and/or uniform.
  • This position will require rotating shifts.
  • Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • This position is subject to an irregular tour of duty, that may span a 7-day, 24-hour operation.
  • Incumbent is required to wear half and/or full face respirator during range maintenance.
  • THIS IS AN OBLIGATED POSITION.

Physical Effort: Works under the supervision of a Branch Supervisor, with intermittent technical work direction of Working Leader or a higher graded employee who provides instructions on work to be accomplished. Work assignments are received in the form of written, or oral instructions on work to be accomplished, and discusses changes in policies and procedures concerning administrative matters; relies on incumbent to independently perform assigned tasks and request maintenance assistance for work beyond authorized level. Works within and around live fire training ranges and urban warfare facilities, using schedules provided by the Supervisor and must anticipate timeframe for work completion to meet these schedules. Incumbent performs recurring tasks as an individual or a team member and often at work sites remote from immediate supervision and/or on a differing work schedule. Completed work is subject to spot check for adherence to instructions, safety, equipment and range operational readiness status, and standard shop practices and the readiness of equipment. Ensuring safety and operation standards are achieved is critical to prevent a life/limb incident. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside during all types of weather conditions. Works around and with electrical power supplies from 12 volt DC, 120 VAC, 480 VAC to 3-phase high voltage current. Works inside in areas, which may be dusty, drafty, noisy and unheated. Stands on concrete and gravel floors, and works outside in rough terrain. Works around military combat, and tactical wheel and track vehicles and heavy equipment during range and urban combat facilities training operations. Exposed to danger of loud noises, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies, and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operating remotely controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns, electrical shock, falls, vehicle accidents, snakebites, skin irritants from poisonous plants and explosives. Hearing protective devices, hard hats with face shield and other safety equipment and devices are issued or readily available for use. Required to enter impact areas containing unexploded munitions. Environmental differential pay is authorized when the incumbent is required to load or unload Hoffman charges, deploy other electrically detonated explosive charges, and/or to work in areas generating a threat from unstable dud munitions.
