About the Position: This position is located at Fort Hamilton in southern New York City, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, at the base of the world-famous Verrazano Narrows Bridge. It is 20 minutes to mid-town Manhattan. Since Spring 1998, the Fort Hamilton Military Community has been home to the North Atlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; New York City Recruiting Battalion; and New York Military Entrance Processing Station. Commuter buses and trains are readily accessible from this location.

Duties

Serves as a Police Officer (Desk Sergeant) assigned to shift operations with responsibility to direct, coordinate, and oversee desk operations. Receive and records radio, telephone and personal messages, requests for information and assistance. Act as the point of contact in an emergency followed by the supervisory police officer. Relay messages and instructions to patrol officers. Inform employees of changes in policy and operating procedures. Inspect personnel to ensure they have appropriate equipment and meet appearance standards. Interpret rules, regulations, and operating procedures, answers general inquiries.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to carry firearms or other weapons authorized for their jurisdictions and required to re-familiarize themselves with authorized weapons periodically and demonstrate skill/proficiency in their use.
  • Requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.
  • Requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Work requires the employee to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
  • This position requires you to undergo and successfully pass an initial and annual physical examination and continue to be physically fit to perform the duties of a Desk Sergeant.
  • Duties require the incumbent to wear a prescribed uniform while on duty.
  • Employee must successfully complete the emergency 911 operators course, qualified breathalyzer and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminal operator within 12 months of employment.
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • Must successfully complete the U.S. Army Civilian Police Academy program instruction within one year if it has not already been completed.
  • Position is designated as Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Required to undergo and successfully pass initial and annual re-certification of standard Army physical agility test.
  • Required to be certified in the use of radar detection equipment and alcohol detection equipment.
  • Work may involve lifting and carrying heavy objects of up to 50 pounds.
