About the Position: Fort Hamilton New York City, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, is at the base of Verrazano Narrows Bridge. 20 minutes to mid-town Manhattan. FT Hamilton is home to the North Atlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Recruiting Battalion; Military Entrance Processing Station. Commuter buses and trains are readily accessible.
Duties
Serve as a Shift Supervisor (Watch Commander) for the Law Enforcement force assigned under the authority of the Senior Commander.
Exercise search and apprehension authority, detains witnesses, apprehends suspects, interviews witnesses and other persons involved, and determines whether facts warrant apprehension or lesser action.
Conduct and/or participate in civilian training regarding various law enforcement topics conducted on an Army installation.
Conduct traffic law enforcement patrol using specialized equipment such as radar, Lidar and breathalyzer.
Process visitors by determining purpose of visit; gives appropriate instruction/directions; determines the need for escorts.
Perform supervisory and administrative duties relating to the police force.
Set employee standards for performance and prepares performance evaluations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Required to carry a firearm in the performance of duties.
- Law enforcement duties are performed on rotating shifts at a major military installation.
- The 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the gun control act of 1968 covers this position. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor, or crimes of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
- Incumbent required to carry a firearm and remain proficient in the use of assigned weapon.
- Incumbent required to possess a valid driver’s license in the state where they live.
- Incumbent required to undergo pre-employment urinalysis and drug testing and periodically thereafter.
- Incumbent must undergo and pass physical examination annually.
- Incumbent must undergo and pass physical agility test annually.
- Incumbent must be certified in use of radar detection equipment and alcohol detection equipment.
- MUST have successfully completed an accredited law enforcement training academy, i.e., Federal, State, Municipal, Military that consisted of at least 400 classroom hours.
- This position may expose the incumbent to inclement weather while working both inside and outside.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear a prescribed uniform while on duty.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 20% of the time.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Performing law enforcement duties, such as responding to and/or investigating emergency calls, complaints and/or other calls for service; 2) Leading or supervising security or law enforcement personnel; and 3) Preparing reports such as sworn statements, affidavits, and/or in-depth reports pertaining to law enforcement operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
