The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York's mission is to investigate, prosecute and deter violations of federal statutes, enforce and represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, uphold civil, constitutional and victims' rights, and foster partnerships with other federal, state and local government agencies and community groups.

Duties

This Legal Administrative Specialist (Litigation Support) serves as a member of a litigation team composed of legal and support staff. In coordination with the office's Information Technology (IT) Manager, actively participates in investigating and litigating civil and criminal cases by providing litigation support services to manage and analyze case materials in support of the trial team. Cases handled involve some of the most complex and difficult in the United States Attorney's office (USAO) because they may require organizing, tracking and analyzing thousands or tens of thousands of items of evidence, millions of data elements, or involve untried or especially novel computer or digital imaging applications. Automated support is necessary to prepare, organize, index, develop, and manage exhibits, evidence, or other data relevant to cases presented before a jury, grand jury or in other legal proceedings. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Legal Administrative Specialist (Litigation Support) support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York, located in Brooklyn, New York, focusing in the areas of legal automation requirements and systems Typical work assignments will include: With attorneys and key legal support staff, organizes voluminous case information for efficient retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing and controlling of documents into a data base. In coordination with the office's IT Manager, analyzes automated litigation support functions and recommends changes to increase the system efficiency and effectiveness. Monitors system use and response time, conducts cost-benefit analyses, and develops implementation plans. Researching and summarizing factual aspects of cases, analyzing reports, testimony, interviews, and files. Performing research for pleadings, memoranda of law, trial briefs, subpoenas, complaints, indictments, motion papers, and responses to defense motions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience for the respective grade level in which you are applying: To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must possess: Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) three (3) of the four (4) duties listed below: Researching legal and factual issues to design case litigation support approaches; Analyzing legal issues, factual issues, and subject matter details involved in a case to determine the data needed, methods of obtaining data, and the relevance of data already available; Advising on legal automation requirements and system implementation; and Evaluating litigation support technologies for recommended resolutions. TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. You must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted; recommended SF-50s include promotions and step increases (within grade increases).
