The Geriatrics Program Specialist positions is a staff position that is accountable to Geriatrics & Extended Care (GEC) Chief as well as to all of the organization's GEC managers and supervisor's at the Charlie Norwood VAMC.
Duties
Duties of the position includes but not limited to:
Assists leadership by collecting, compiling and/or tracking statistical information in support of program operations and to access status or outcomes in relation to established performance measures, goals, and objectives.
Tracks and trends data related to the Service Line program effectiveness and SAIL data.
Performs Performance Improvement training and guidance with Sails metrics throughout department by independently leading Performance Improvement Work group.
Prepares, executes, and/or tracks Performance Improvement specific information such as service metrics, open encounter tracking, congressional inquiries, and contacts within the organizational unit.
Utilizes various software applications (i.e. VATAS, CPRS, VISTA, GUI, TMS, Maximo, VSSC) to obtain information for completion of monthly reports at the request of the Chief and/or Administrative Officer of the Service Line.
Serve as a Primary timekeeper for the Service Line.
Oversee and provide guidance to maintain automated filing system for the Service Line. Creates electronic file folders on a variety of subject matter, administrative files such as travel, training, and correspondence.
Training administrator for Service Line providing guidance and assistance in operating the VA Training Management System (TMS).
Provide guidance to Service Line as ADPAC, providing programmatic activities such as VISTA data entry, processing reports, and file maintenance.
Communicate effectively with patients, providers, facility services, and community care vendors. Answers routine inquiries from other service lines and Veterans or family members and makes referrals as needed.
Provide guidance by assisting with consolidating and presenting EOC rounding information to Service Chief and ensure all services tickets or facility planning LEAF requests completed.
Utilize statistical data to compile deliverables and summarize program data to generate reports for the Service.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8:00am - 4:30pm depending on the needs of the agency

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/21/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5, for grade level GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience GS-7: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge for the administrative organization and operation of the health care system, the ability to recommend changes in administrative policies, the ability to foresee administrative problems and devise and install procedures and practices that affect subordinate organizations, the ability to make independent decisions in areas of administrative policy and procedures. Knowledge of clinical credentialing and privileging requirements; independently planning and evaluating the programmatic functions within an organization; organizing and retrieving information, correspondence and numerical data for use in reports and briefings; using office automation software; ability to interpret procedures, policies, and regulations of a medical facility. This experience must be supported by your resume to be creditable.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a 1 full year of graduate level education or Superior academic achievement.
OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond experience and education to qualify at the GS-5 level. This will be computed by first determining your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. For example if you possess nine semester hours of graduate education (50% of the education requirement) and six months of qualifying experience (50% of specialized experience requirement) you meet 100% of the requirement and be qualified.
Specialized experience GS-9: Do you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Program Specialist position to be filled? Knowledge for the administrative organization and operation of the health care system, the ability to recommend changes in administrative policies, the ability to foresee administrative problems and devise and install procedures and practices that affect subordinate organizations, the ability to make independent decisions in areas of administrative policy and procedures. Physical Requirements: The work of this position is primarily sedentary in nature. However, short periods of walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items, such as papers and books, are required on an occasional basis. No special physical demands are required by the work of this position.
