About the Position:
This position is with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GRL), located in Vicksburg, MS.
Duties
Works under the general supervision of the Branch Chief.
Implements engineering-type techniques, methods, and shop experience in connection with the design, evaluation, manufacture, assembly, inspection, and fabrication of detailed physical models in both the research and development and production stages.
Works with engineering team to develop drawings, specifications and requirements for the development and fabrication of complex physical models.
Proceeds upon own initiative to develop detailed workflows and carries out assignments to completion.
Reviews drawings, specifications and requirements for complex systems prepared by local and outside agencies for technical adequacy.
Recommends changes in materials, dimensions, tolerances, clearances, finishes and assembly.
Makes extensive use of literature and record material pertinent to the work and draws heavily upon own knowledge, experience, and judgment.
Keeps supervisor informed of all significant developments and confers with them for assistance, guidance, or concurrence on workflow and development of test articles.
Work is reviewed for conformity with controls and for achievement of satisfactory results.
Analyzes test data obtained and reports results, making recommendations and drawing conclusions as appropriate.
Prepares interim and final technical reports of work performed.
Reviews reports prepared by other agencies or others engaged in assigned portions of the related work.
Performs duties such as directing and reviewing work of subordinates, making cost estimates, and progress reports.
Responsible for knowledge and observance of all safety rules and regulations as applied to the work described.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes;
Experience in five or more of the following:
(1) metal fabrication and general welding,
(2) finish carpentry,
(3) finish paint work,
(4) fiberglass and composite construction,
(5) proficiency with CAD software packages e.g., Mastercam,
(6) proficiency with operation of 5 axis CNC machines
(7) instrumentation and measurement devices
(8) heavy equipment operation and overhead crane,
or
(9) field test section related to the demonstration of physical models.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service DE-02 (GS-10).
This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project at the DE-04 (equivalent to GS-10) grade level. In accordance with the Federal Register Vol. 63, No. 57, dated March 25, 1998, Laboratory Demonstration Project employees must have a current average performance score of at least 2.5 or equivalent (fully successful rating) for promotion consideration.
