This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration Military Operations Branch. The incumbent will provide technical assistance to Federal agencies in the management of their records, conduct quality audits, and provide assistance or instruction to new and lower-graded employees, explaining standard operating procedures, educating them on the current methods and terminology, and providing overall training and guidance..
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Archives Technician, you will:
Develop and apply procedures, instructions, and training aids to improve quality, ensure the effective operation of quality control and assist NARA in reaching its strategic goals.
Identify and analyze inefficient or lacking work processes or issues that arise.
Provide technical guidance to staff performing reference services, the searching, shelving and relocation of records, and related activities; and advise and provide technical assistance to records officers, requesters, and staff in resolving reference service problems caused by inadequate finding aids, poor arrangement of records or improperly prepared agency requests.
Ensure that received classified records are immediately identified and stored in an appropriately rated storage environment.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
This position requires candidates to pass a physical abilities test designed to measure candidates' ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires carrying 30-pound boxes like those found on the job. It also requires bending, squatting, and walking to reach the boxes in addition to climbing and balancing on a pulpit ladder up to 15 feet high.
Specialized Experience for the GS-06 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-05 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:
Communicating with customers and responding to inquiries, verbally or in writing.
AND
Using systems to locate items and/or using documentation to identify information relevant to a work assignment.
AND
Applying regulations and policies to accomplish work assignments.
Specialized Experience for the GS-05 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-04 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and which equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:
Communicating to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing.
AND
Experience with record management.
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.
NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks
For the GS-05, you must have been at the GS-04level for 52 weeks.
.Advancement to positions up to GS-5: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
Education
Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
