The Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Department within the Clinical Center provides PET imaging services for both inpatient and outpatient research participants. The Radiochemistry Section in PET has the primary responsibility to manufacture PET drug products for immediate use in PET imaging studies. Individuals with relevant experience are encouraged to apply. The official title of this position is Chemist.
Duties
As a GS-1310-12 Radiochemist with the PET Department your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Producing routine PET drugs.
Investigating the root cause of Out of Specification (OOS) PET drug syntheses and recommending corrective and preventative action (CAPA) to minimize production deviations/failures and preparing the reports to reflect findings and recommendations.
Developing new PET drug products for use in new protocols based on requirements provided by the Supervisory Radiochemist and identifying any issues regarding their development and providing recommendations to address them.
Planning, conducting and reporting the results of studies/projects to address issues as assigned by the supervisor.
Performing and documenting installation qualification, operator qualification, and performance qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) of new equipment and/or PET drug manufacturing procedures.
The incumbent is under closer supervision and receives more detailed instructions at the GS-11 level. As the incumbent progresses, the amount of supervision will gradually be reduced. This position has a full performance level of GS-12.

Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement:
Degree: bachelor's or higher level degree from an accredited college or university in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics;
OR
Combination of education and experience; course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Additional Qualification for the GS-11 level:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting with the performance of radiochemistry duties in the areas of synthesizing and developing Positron Emission Tomography (PET) drug products; synthesizing and assisting in the formulation of existing PET drug products by using reagents, chemicals, and precursor radioactivity; assisting in the preparation of documentation such as SOPs and reports; and maintaining specialized PET equipment and supplies;
OR
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree;
OR
A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Additional Qualifications for the GS-12 level:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: preparing and issuing weekly production schedules for synthesizing existing drug products; providing training and guidance to others in the use of equipment and the conduct of laboratory methods under Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) principles; independently performing complex radiochemistry duties in the areas of synthesizing and developing Positron Emission Tomography (PET) drug products; synthesizing and formulating existing PET drug products by using reagents, chemicals, and precursor radioactivity; preparing documentation such as SOPs and reports; and maintaining specialized PET equipment and supplies.
