As a Research Chemist, the incumbent will have a vital responsibility for ensuring the regulatory compliance, effectiveness, and reliability of the NIMH radiotracer production program, and for the continuous maintenance and development of its capability under a Quality Management System. In addition, this position is seen as a vital contributor to the PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Section (PRSS) program of novel PET radiotracer discovery and development.
Duties
The incumbment will serve as the Senior Research Chemist within PRRS, to include duties but not limited:
Uniquely, contributes high-level radiochemical engineering expertise and skills on the design and creation of new automated radiosynthesis devices and their control systems.
Engage in the development of new radiolabeling agents from cyclotron-produced starting materials, for application to positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer production and experimental radiochemistry.
Identifies, defines, and selects specific problems for study, and determines the investigations and approaches that are likely to be most productive.
Leads the development of satisfactory production methods for 'literature' and experimental PET radiotracers.
Trains new members of the PET radiotracer production team in the regulatory, practical and technical aspects of PET radiotracer production under Current Good Manufacturing (CGMP)-like conditions (e.g., SOPs, CMC sections, eINDs).
Presents information and data arising from performance of duties in verbal settings (e.g., internal and external seminars, scientific meetings, etc.), or non-verbal settings (e.g., poster presentations at scientific meetings). Contributes verbally and in writing to scientific reports and publications arising from laboratory research

Qualifications
You qualify at the GS-14 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:
Basic Requirement:
In order to qualify for a Research Chemist GS-1320 position, you must have completed a bachelor's or graduate or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics OR a combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Additional Requirement:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: managing research programs focused on the development of radiochemistry and automated radiosynthesis devices; designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining radiochemical apparatus and radiosynthesis equipment; managing PET radiotracer production activities and presenting scientific findings and conclusions to the research community; assessing compliance of PET radiotracer production with regulations and standards; providing training on PET radiotracer production and radiochemistry.
