This position serves as the Team Lead Chemist in the Department of Laboratory Medicine Chemistry Mass Spectrometry/HPLC Section and reports to the Chief Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Chemistry Service. The staff in the Chemistry Service are routinely involved in clinical and research protocols, testing unusual specimens, and the care of immuno-compromised patients. The data generated by the Chemists' work are part of both clinical and research studies.

Duties

As a GS-1320-12, Lead Chemist, your duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Ensuring that the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision and values of the NIH, the Clinical Center, and the Department of Laboratory Medicine are communicated to the team and integrated into the team's strategies, goals, objectives, work plans and work products and services. Leading the team in identifying, distributing, and balancing workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level and/or occupational specialization; makes adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks: and ensures that each employee has an integral role in developing the final team product. Performing routine and specialized testing in the Special Chemistry, Mass Spectrometry, and HPLC sections. Reviewing and analyzing daily quality control data and takes the appropriate steps to ensure quality results. Identifying unusual or unexpected results and their probable causes and recommending rerunning experiments/lab studies with patient samples modifying conditions as necessary. Developing new methods for collecting, analyzing, organizing, and recording experimental data appropriate for publication and future reference by others.

  • The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing and walking, bending over instruments and microscopes, and lifting light to moderately heavy items such as reagents packs and various supplies.
  • The work environment involves regular and recurring exposure to infectious agents such as hepatitis and HIV and to noxious and flammable liquids such as xylene and formalin.
  • Chemists are required to use protective clothing such as lab coats, goggles, gloves, and must follow all Universal Safety precautions. Chemists may work in a Biohazard Level 2 facility.
  • The Department of Laboratory Medicine also contains both a Biohazard Level 2+ and a Biohazard Level 3 laboratory for the testing of samples which may contain highly infectious agents.
  • Incumbents working with radioactive sources such as those found in blood irradiators will be required to complete a background security check to be certified as “trustworthy and reliable” by DPSAC.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Lead Chemist, GS-1320 position, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's or graduate or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR A combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition, in order to qualify for a Lead Chemist position, at the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: using a wide range of Mass Spectrometry/HPLC concepts, principles, practices, and methodologies of chemistry to conduct research and modify or adapt standard processes and procedures; conducting in-depth clinical testing involving the review, analysis, and coordination of scientific technical data; and planning, developing, and implementing chemistry Mass Spectrometry/HPLC experiments and protocols. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
