You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the Radiation Health Division (Code 105.5), Radiological Control Office (Code 105) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will provide direction and technical assistance for all instrumentation use and problem resolution.
You will develop software that interfaces with dosimetry processing equipment and perform complex functions and calculations.
You will perform analysis and evaluation for fleet dosimetry investigations and problems.
You will submit official correspondence with recommendations to NAVSEA on important dosimetry topics.
You will conduct research and development projects in conjunction with the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) on new dosimetrist technology.
You will provide oversight, troubleshooting and technical assistance for Automated Radiological Controls Management Information System at the shipyard and satellite locations.
Requirements

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
Qualifications
GS-11
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations, NAVSEA policies and procedures, BUMED policies and procedures, Federal regulations, State regulations, shipyard regulations, and applicable technical manuals.
Experience applying the functions and objectives of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Controls Office, and Radiation Health Division.
Experience operating principles of naval nuclear reactors and reactor systems.
GS-09
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying the theories, principles, technical applications of radiation dosimetry, radioactivity analysis, environmental monitory, radiation safety, and emergency response.
Experience applying clinic policies and procedures for scheduling appointments, referring patients to the appropriate facilities, and compiling and submitting data on patients to facilitate the performance of radiation physicals.
Experience assembling medical records, laboratory tests, and examination results and extracting pertinent information from these results to complete necessary forms and logs.

Education
Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must posses:

Bachelor's degree or higher in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
GS-11:
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
GS-09:
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree
