The Accounting Technician position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Finance Service, in Gainesville, FL.
Duties

Duties may include, but may not be limited to:
Accounting General Duties:
Examines, verifies, and maintains financial accounts and accounting data and classifies accounting transactions including the verification of the accuracy and completeness of the accounting.
Receive and analyzes various types of documents to determine propriety, validity, budget, expenditure limitation completeness, and correctness of the account data.
Processes payments to Vendors and Customers doing business with the VA and to Veterans for their Beneficiary Travel pay.
Understands accounting procedures relating to appropriations control, transfer of funds, reimbursements of expenditures, refunds of administrative expenses, discounts, and handling of payments.
Follow-up/Research:
Researches, interprets, and verifies which appropriation and general ledger accounts to document and subsequent accounting transactions will affect; establishes routines for input of these transactions.
Assigns transactions that will have the proper accounting effect.
Documents financial transactions to assure a proper audit trail.
Reviews pending items and ensures that follow-up is taken on all items pending for excessive periods of time.
Supports:
Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions.
Communicates and treat customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.
Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customers constructively and appropriately.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00AM - 4:30PM

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service, that equips you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may include; having a working knowledge of existing accounting regulations, standard accounting codes, classifications, and terminology; an understanding of accounting policies, procedures, and requirements and the ability to apply various accounting methods; understands accounting procedures related to appropriation funding, allotments, obligations and disbursements and the ability to analyze the interrelationship of accounts that are affected by varied transactions within a double entry accounting system; variety of procurement transactions and documents, accounting symbolic codes, account structures and procedures for setting up and liquidating obligations; comprehension of general ledger and subsidiary accounts in an account structure requiring a number of assets and liability control accounts and considerable subdivision of accounts, cost accounting system utilizing cost center, sub-accounts and fund control points; having skills in the operation of calculators and computer systems such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Internet Browsers, Adobe Acrobat, and Financial Accounting Systems; and proficient in procedures used to enter, modify, retrieve and delete information in a Financial Management System .

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with some walking, standing, and bending. The Accounting Technician may be required to lift and move files/printouts. However, alternate cashier duties may require some minimal physical exertion such a lifting a cash box. Travel may be required between the medical center to the various out-post medical center locations.
