The Medical Administrative Assistant (Administrative Officer of the Day) is located within the Office of the Chief Health Administration Service (HAS), maintains continuity of functions, and provides full support to clinical and administrative medical center staff. Responsible for achieving management objectives and providing technical guidance necessary to meet procedural, legal, and administrative requirements relating to the care and treatment of patients.
Duties
Major Duties include but not limited to:
Utilizes knowledge of medical center organization, functions, specialties, and programs, i.e., Social Work, Nursing, Laboratory, Radiology, IRM, Engineering, and Environmental Management.
Maintains continuity of functions and provides full support to clinical and administrative medical center staff.
Provides technical guidance necessary to meet procedural, legal and administrative requirements relating to the care and treatment of patients.
Provides compassionate and sympathetic explanation of death and burial benefits to family and next of kin.
Assist with or prepares daily Gains and Losses Sheet and other related statistical reports.
Provides daily report/log of all activities occurring during tours of duty.
Enforces Medical Center policy that only authorized personnel are allowed into certain areas after regular duty hours.
Responds to emergencies, determines priorities and nature of action to be taken; authorizes service, supplies and personnel.
Safeguards and manages valuable and clothing room activities.
Provides administrative authority, guidance, and advice to the Medical Officer of the Day (MOD), and all other clinical staff concerning administrative matters.
Provides orientation and situational technical advice to physicians regarding VA policies and procedures.
Assists medical center staff with medically related legal problems, including; involuntary commitments, orders of protective custody, and management of unruly or severely disturbed patients.
Processes administrative issues surrounding, beneficiary death, seriously ill cases, elopements, suicides, assaults, death on arrival (DOA's), homicides, codes, and facility or community disasters, etc.
Oversees determination of applicant's eligibility; obtaining income and insurance information for appropriate non-service-connected applicants.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Rotating Shifts- 4:00pm to 12:00am or 12:00am to 8:00am. Weekend and Holiday Shifts 8:00 am - 4:00pm. (Rotating tour during when hours, including rotating tour during Weekends and Holidays.)

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/04/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
You may qualify based on your Specialized Experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience assisting medical center staff with medically related legal problems, including involuntary commitments, orders of protective custody, and managing unruly or severely disturbed patients; providing technical guidance to meet procedural, legal, and administrative requirements relating to patient care; and experience preparing daily statistical reports.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work requires sitting, standing, and walking through the facility; may be required to lift objects such as suitcases, clothing or medical chairs. The normal work environment is in an air-conditioned and heated setting with minimal environmental discomfort.
