This position is a temporary promotion that can be extended for a total of 5 years without further competition. The selectee may be returned, at any time, to the position from which temporarily promoted or to a different position of equivalent grade and pay.

Duties

If selected for this position, you will serve as the secretary to the United States Attorney (USA), providing a variety of technical and administrative support services. Typical work assignments will include: Representing the USA when addressing leading figures with the government, business, law enforcement community, members of the media, and others; Exercising control over the USA's calendar for all appointments, meetings, engagements, and conferences with complete authority for commitment of time, and preparing agendas and notifying participants; Speaking on behalf of the USA, accurately reflecting philosophies, policies, goals, and management objectives; Coordinating press releases, fielding calls from the media, and participating in a variety of media events with the USA; Reviewing all incoming and outgoing correspondence; Making travel arrangements for USA; Producing a variety of written documents using varied and advanced office automation software; and Providing support to executive management as requested. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-10: GS-9GS-10: To be eligible at the GS-10GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9GS-8 level. Specialized experience is defined as: Performing a wide range of high-level secretarial and administrative support functions in a legal environment. Examples of specialized experience include exercising control over scheduling and arranging high-level meetings and conferences; screening telephone calls and visitors; composing a variety of written material using advanced functions in office automation software; developing statistical reports; preparing travel; and reviewing incoming and outgoing correspondence prepared for the executive's signature. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors. Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your Department of Justice component has notified you in writing that you are a surplus or displaced employee eligible for CTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your CTAP eligibility, 2) you apply under the instructions in this announcement, and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy. To be well qualified, you must satisfy all qualification requirements for the vacant position and receive a score of 85 or better on established ranking criteria.
