This position is located within Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, Washington. The individual selected for this position serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and specimen procurement and processing.
Duties

Major Duties:
Verifies identity of patient and collects blood specimens with minimal discomfort to the patient using standard phlebotomy techniques.
Performs both venipuncture and capillary collections utilizing vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, or finger stick devices.
Collects blood from both inpatients and outpatients and labels samples accurately, centrifuges, and aliquots samples as needed.
Performs a full range of laboratory testing and examination of blood, urine, body fluids and other specimens.
Performs routine laboratory testing in all areas of the clinical laboratory including Hematology, Toxicology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Immunology, Blood Bank, and Microbiology.
Performs non-routine testing as required: performs complex analyses and infrequently requested tests which may include transfusion reaction work-up, manual chemistry methods, body fluid analysis with manual differential, or special coagulation tests.
Packages laboratory specimens for pick up and shipment to reference laboratories.
Instructs medical technologist, medical technician, and phlebotomy students as well as new employees in approved laboratory techniques as assigned.
Performs and evaluates quality control and proficiency testing samples according to laboratory standard operating procedures.
Ensures that laboratory areas are stocked, maintains appropriate inventories, and notifies appropriate personnel when supplies need to be ordered.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position.

1.) Experience in phlebotomy and performing blood draws on humans.
-AND-To qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Experience: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Technician. Specialized experience for this position includes: (a) performing technical medical laboratory support work such as laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, toxicology, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) providing technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a Medical Technician. This also includes experience collecting, categorizing, cataloging, storing, and maintaining specimen integrity; and calibrating, standardizing, and maintaining equipment and instruments. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week.

Education: Successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) from an accredited institution with course work directly related to the work of a Medical Technician may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-07 grade level. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and transcripts are required.

Combination: Combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond 9 semester hours) as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of a Medical Technician is fully qualifying at the GS-07 grade level. If you are using a combination to qualify, you must document your experience in your resume and submit transcripts. NOTE: Your experience must be detailed in your resume and transcripts are required.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires manual dexterity and exceptional hand/eye coordination, some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking, bending, sitting over a microscope and concentrate for long periods of time while reading specimens and to stand for several consecutive hours during the preparation of specimens. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. Position requires lifting of reagent containers weighing up to 35 pounds.
