As an Aerospace Engineering Technician with the Experimental Fabrication Team, you are responsible for planning, coordinating, and accomplishing complete major projects entailing the design, layout and manufacture of metal and plastic components for installation onto research aircraft. The work is of critical significance in proving the validity of research concepts and contributes to the accomplishments of aerospace and aeronautical research.

Develop the layout and fabrication of 3D geometrical shapes out of ferrous, non-ferrous metals and plastic models, utilizing subtractive manufacturing techniques such as cutting, machining, and abrading.
Work directly with aerospace engineers and scientists in the design and development of complex projects, such as prototype research flight articles (aeronautical and space), developmental instrumentation, aerospace models and related equipment.
Utilize, program, maintain and troubleshoot conventional and computer numerical control (CNC) machines such as lathes, mills, wire electrical discharge machine (EDM), water jet cutting equipment, laser cutting, etching, and engraving equipment.
Develop novel research instruments, test devices, or prototype components with difficult performance requirements or where techniques or components in combination or application differ from previous uses.
Prepare design specifications for various projects or systems of a complex or unconventional nature that entail design problems requiring considerable adaptation of precedents or design of features for which precedents are not directly applicable.
Design and sets up unusual machine tool assemblies, systems, and tests the accuracy to evaluate the manufacturing feasibility. Uses comparators, computer measuring equipment (CMM) and quality inspection equipment.
Work from verbal information, sketches, blueprints, technical orders and computer models. Attends engineering design review to evaluate and develop preliminary design concepts and specifications to satisfy project objectives.
Apply knowledge of materials and their characteristics including strength and heat treatments, machinability, surface finishes, and proper applications.

Qualifications
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service.
Experience in the engineering, production, and manufacturing of metals, to include utilizing machining technology, such as, computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM);
Interpreting Geometric, dimensioning and Tolerancing (G, D, & T) and other tolerancing methods through the use of computer measuring equipment (CMM) and other automated inspection equipment; and
Inspecting the manufacturing, or modification of parts and/or related aircraft installations.
