Duties
The U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Inspector General is offering an exciting detail opportunity to a Data Analyst position within our Data Analytics Unit at the GS-13 or GS-14 level. The opportunity is open to current Federal employees on a career or career-conditional appointment in the competitive service only. This is a reimbursable detail and is available for up to six months, beginning on/about January 2024. The selectee must be eligible for a Secret level security clearance and will be paid at their current rate of pay for the duration of the detail.
This detail is within the Data Analytics Unit of the Department of the Interior's Office of Inspector General (DOI OIG). Our mission is to empower DOI OIG with data, partnering with subject matter experts across the organization to support investigations, audits, office-wide management, and the executive team. The Data Analytics Unit builds and maintains self-service data tools for every office in DOI OIG, enhances individual audits and investigations with data analytics and statistical methods, conducts ad hoc analysis for the executive team, leads data access efforts, develops proactive investigative leads, and provides training to support data literacy. Analytics team members use a range of tools, including Power BI, SQL, Python, R, and ArcGIS, to deliver products that add value to our partners across DOI OIG.
If selected, you will work on multiple challenging projects simultaneously in a collaborative team environment. You will have the opportunity to develop products related to varied subject matter, including energy data, Infrastructure oversight, grants, and organizational health. On any given day, you might analyze data to support a research question within an audit, build a new feature on a self-service tool, visualize organizational data to support executive decision-making, or help an investigator wade through messy data to support an active case.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Supports OIG investigative and audit work products with analytics
Oversees data programs and projects
Supports the development of other OIG employees' data analytics skills
Provides policy advice about matters related to data analytics and analytical tools
This position reports to the Director of the Data Analytics Unit within the Office of Strategy, Data, and Innovation.

Performing quantitative analyses using any of the following: spreadsheets, databases, data management applications, and data visualization applications
Writing summaries of analytic work
To be considered for the GS-14* level, your experience should demonstrate:
Leading analytical projects while setting goals, milestones, and scope and providing guidance to others
Responding to customer requests using data analytics tools on large, complex, or novel data sets
Giving presentations or briefings related to data analytics work
*Applicants who are not currently at the GS-14 may be considered for the GS-14 level as a detail to a higher grade, not a temporary promotion. This means that if selected for the GS-14 level as a detail to a higher grade, you will maintain your current rate of pay for the duration of the detail.
