Part of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Serves as the Lead Writer-Editor and assist the Chief, Customer Service Branch Chief (CSB) with providing senior editorial support to CJCS, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (VCJCS), the Director, Joint Staff (DJS), and the Vice Director, Joint Staff (VDJS). Work requires analytical ability, judgement, discretion, and knowledge of a substantial body of administrative, and highly sensitive politico-military documents.

Duties

As a LEAD WRITER-EDITOR at the GS-1082-14 some of your typical work assignments may include: Provides final review of highly-sensitive politico-military memorandums, letters, assessments, plans, and strategies prior to approval by the Top 4; Researches and analyzes information about highly technical subject; evaluates reports and studies as to intended purpose, style, manner of presentation, organization, structure, proposed implementation, and distribution; Coaches and advises the Senior Editors inside the Branch on document preparation and presentation to ensure concise, accurate correspondence; Provides advice, counseling, and instruction on work and administrative matters to the writers-editors in the Branch, as well as employees external to the division, to include Joint Staff members and personnel across the Department of Defense engage in politico-military writing-editing. Identifies, distributes, and balances workload and tasks among the writer-editors in the Branch in accordance with established workflow, skill level, and/or occupational specialization.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-14, if you fulfill the following qualifications: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service: Interprets and explains a variety of subjects and writes and edits materials tailored to specific media and audiences; Applies command of sources and research methods in developing authoritative information and programs, policies, functions, and research of the agency, the relationships among agency programs and related issues and practices in the private sector; Utilizes editorial nuances, principles and techniques of communicating information to ensure presentation is presentable to the intended recipient, subject matter is clear and concise for intended audience and information fulfills it communication objectives; Applies editorial knowledge to review, analyze edit and do substantial rewriting of a wide range of executive-level, high visibility correspondence with worldwide significance; Analyzes, interprets and integrates information in a variety of formats to support preparation of high visibility correspondence of extreme sensitivity. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
