About the Position:
This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project. Engineering Technician (Civil) within the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), providing support and assistance as it applies to hydrographic, hydrodynamic, topographic, and environmental studies.
Duties
Perform installations, maintenance, modifications, inspections, and testing of data collection systems.
Participate on teams for developing and planning research and development activities.
Assist with evaluating trial test and repair methods to support engineers and scientists.
Maintain, operate and perform minor maintenance and repairs on mechanized equipment.
Manufacturers point of contact relative to equipment maintenance, functional parameters, changes or adaptations.
Evaluate causes of failure or unsatisfactory performance issues in research equipment.
Interface with professional engineers, contractors, and other technical specialists.
Maintain databases of data collected during tests and experiments.
Make repairs as necessary to sensors and equipment.
Schedule necessary maintenance/repair work.
Requirements
- Appointment subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Temporary duty travel less than 15% to other duty locations.

This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project at the DE-02 (equivalent to GS-5 thru 7). In accordance with the Federal Register Vol. 63, No. 57, dated March 25, 1998, Laboratory Demonstration Project employees must have a current average performance score of at least 2.5 or equivalent (fully successful rating) for promotion consideration.
Experience Required:
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe one year of specialized experience (1) assisting higher-graded technicians and engineers who work in a variety of engineering specializations, specifically hydrographic, hydrodynamic, topographic, and environmental studies; and (2) experience conducting calibration checks on research equipment (tide gages, wave and current instruments, multibeam, unmanned surface vehicles, etc.).
Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. Combination of Experience and Education:
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying (related) education as a percentage of the education required; then determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required; finally, add the two percentages (see questionnaire). The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts).
